History:

The Mojito is a famous Cuban cocktail known for its refreshing blend of rum, lime, mint, sugar, and soda water. Like many classic cocktails, the exact origins of the Mojito are somewhat unclear, but there are a few popular theories that shed light on its history.

One of the earliest claims suggests that the Mojito originated from a medicinal concoction used by the indigenous Taíno people of the Caribbean, who used aguardiente (a crude form of rum), lime, sugarcane juice, and mint for medicinal purposes. When the Spanish arrived in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, they took the native drink and began to refine it.

Another theory suggests that the Mojito was born as a pirate drink in the late 16th century. It's said that a close relative of the Mojito, a drink called "El Draque," was consumed for its medicinal properties. Named after Sir Francis Drake, a renowned privateer, the drink was made with aguardiente, sugar, lime, and mint.

Regardless of its early beginnings, the Mojito we know today started to take shape in the 19th century when the production of rum became more refined and widespread in the Caribbean. The drink became especially popular in Cuba, where high-quality rum was plentiful.

During the period of American Prohibition in the 1920s and early 1930s, the Mojito gained further popularity. Cuba, and Havana in particular, became a favorite destination for Americans traveling abroad for alcohol, and the Mojito was one of the top drinks of choice.

In modern times, the Mojito gained worldwide popularity, partly due to its association with the famous writer Ernest Hemingway, who was a regular at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, Cuba, where Mojitos are a specialty.

Today, the Mojito is known and loved globally as a refreshing cocktail, especially in the summer months. Its simple recipe allows for many variations, although the classic version remains a staple on cocktail menus around the world.
